The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine published statistics. Since the beginning of the Russian military invasion in Ukraine, 460 children have died, 919 minors have received injuries of varying degrees of severity. The prosecutor’s office emphasizes that this is only the data that was verified in the conditions of the war: real figures can be higher.
The prosecutor’s office also reports that during the war, 3,126 children’s and educational institutions were damaged by shelling and bombing, 337 of them were completely destroyed.
More than 16 thousand children were deported to Russia.
These data are close to UN statistics, according to which about 1,100 Ukrainian children have been killed and injured since February 2022. 1.2 million children left their homes and found refuge inside the country. 7.7 million people left Ukraine and became refugees in other countries, most of them women and children.
UNICEF – the United Nations Children’s Fund – stated that in 2023, 1.1 billion dollars will need to be allocated to meet the needs of Ukrainian children both inside the country and abroad. Of these, 829 million dollars are needed to support children in Ukraine itself, and 229 million dollars – for refugee children abroad. This amount includes the costs of education, food, accommodation and medical care.
- The Russian authorities have repeatedly stated that they do not attack civilian objects and residential buildings in Ukraine. The movement of Ukrainian citizens, including children, to the territory of Russia is qualified as voluntary refugee status.
