The European Weightlifting Federation responded to the incident with the burning of the Azerbaijani flag in Yerevan, which occurred at the European Championship. This is reported by “Glavpost” with a link to the website of the Federation.
“The European Weightlifting Federation strongly condemns the incident that occurred during the opening ceremony of the European Weightlifting Championship in Yerevan on April 14, 2023, during which a person set fire to the flag of Azerbaijan,” the statement said.
The incident occurred on April 14 at the opening ceremony of the European Championship 2023 in Yerevan. At the moment when the flag of Azerbaijan was brought to the stage, an unknown man ran out there, grabbed the flag and set it on fire.
The Federation noted that they consider this gesture an attack on the integrity of sports values and on the universal principles of fair play.
“The Federation immediately reacted to this incident, expressed a firm position in relation to the organizing committee and asked for additional security guarantees for all participants of this competition. The European Weightlifting Federation was constantly with the delegation from the Republic of Azerbaijan, expressing its full solidarity and support for athletes, coaches and officials,” the organization added.
As reported by the Azerbaijani mass media, the Minister of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Azerbaijan stated that the Azerbaijani delegation decided to leave the competition early after the incident.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan also reacted to the incident, noting that the guilty must be punished.
“We condemn the burning of the national flag of Azerbaijan at the opening ceremony of the European Championship in Armenia. It is worrying that the organizers did not take security measures in relation to such a hate action. The guilty must be punished accordingly!” – wrote the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

According to reports, the offender – Armenian Aram Nikolyan – was taken to the police station for hooliganism.
