Chinese grandmaster Ding Lizhen became the world chess champion
China’s Ding Lyzhen beat Russia’s Yan Nepomnyashchy on a time break to end Magnus Carlsen’s decade-long reign in the format to win the 2023 World Classical Chess Championship in Astana on Sunday, reports Ding became China’s first men’s world champion.
In the fourth game of the time break, Nepomniachy played with white pieces and was defeated. The game ended on the 68th move. Thus, the score at the time break was 2.5:1.5 in favor of Dyn Lyzhenya.
Before that, in games with classical time control, the chess players played a draw – 7:7. Nepomniachy led three times, but Ding Lyzhen managed to fight back.
Nepomniachy lost his second match for the chess crown. In 2021, he was defeated by Norwegian Magnus Carlsen.
In 2022, Nepomniachy won the contenders’ tournament and was supposed to play a match for the title of world champion against Carlsen, but he refused to defend the title, and the opponent of the Russian chess player was Din Lizhen, who took second place at the contenders’ tournament.
