The Customs Service and the FSB detained a large shipment of cocaine in the Bolshoi Port of St. Petersburg. Its total weight is more than a ton. The drug was transported by sea from Nicaragua.

According to the customs officials, 1,000 briquettes with compressed white powder were hidden in a cargo container. The examination confirmed that it was cocaine. The cost of such a lot on the black market would exceed 11 billion rubles.

A criminal case has been initiated on large-scale drug smuggling. Punishment under this article implies imprisonment for a term up to life.

This is not the first time that the customs has stopped the smuggling of drugs through the St. Petersburg port. In June of last year, 50 kilograms of cocaine, hidden in refrigerators for the transportation of bananas, were seized there. The cargo was traveling from Africa to Uzbekistan via Europe. In September, also in the port, 8 kilograms of drugs were discovered on a ship from Latvia.

  • According to the data of the Federal Customs Service, in 2023, four tons of narcotic substances were seized in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region during importation into the country.
