Danube ports brought an additional $1.5 billion to Ukraine after the release of Zmiinyi

The liberation of Zmiiny allowed the opening of the mouth of Bystre for the passage of ships, which led to an increase in the throughput capacity of the Danube ports and brought an additional 1.5 billion dollars to the state.

About this told Deputy Prime Minister of Community Development, Territories and Infrastructure Oleksandr Kubrakov in a column for NV.

After the liberation of Zmiiny Island, Ukraine was able to launch the passage of ships through the mouth of Bystre, which is located in the water area of Ukraine.

As a result, the throughput capacity of the Danube ports tripled and increased to 9 vessels per day.

“The effect for the state was approximately an additional 10 million tons of cargo per year, and for the economy – an additional 1.5 billion dollars,” Kubrakov noted.

In addition, the opening of the Bystre estuary had the effect of lowering the freight rate by 30%, the minister notes.

According to him, since the beginning of the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war, Ukraine has appealed to the Danube Commission, the United Nations, the General Directorate for Mobility and Transport of the European Commission and other international partners to increase the intensity of the passage of ships through the Sulin Canal. In addition, there was a deepened bottom near the port quays to accommodate more ships and cargo.

Thanks to the fact that the maximum draft was increased from 3.9 meters to 6.5 meters, the Danube ports reached a record 12 ship calls and 90 thousand tons per day. In March of this year, transshipment set an absolute monthly record of 2.8 million tons, and a daily record of 93.8 thousand tons.

At the same time, considerable investments are needed to further expand the potential of the Danube ports. According to Kubrakov, the need for investments is at least 120 million dollars and “it will not be possible to attract them solely by the state.”
