Director, People’s Artist of the RSFSR Gleb Panfilov died at the age of 90. This was reported by “Interfax” with reference to the director of the “Lenkom” theater, Mark Varshaver.
“Unfortunately, the great director, a friend of our theater, Gleb Anatolyevich Panfilov, has passed away,” said Varshaver. He added that Panfilov had been recovering from his illness in recent months.
In May, it was reported that he was hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the Odintsovo Hospital with a stroke. After that, according to Varshaver, he was also diagnosed with pneumonia.
Gleb Panfilov was born on May 21, 1934 in Magnitogorsk. In the early years, he worked on Sverdlovsk television, where he shot several films.
In 1966, Panfilov started working at “Lenfilm”, where he shot his first feature film “There is no ford in fire”. This film received the main prize of the festival in Locarno. In 1970, he shot the film “The Beginning” with actress Inna Churikova in the lead role. During filming, they got married.
In 1977, Panfilov began working at the Mosfilm studio, where he shot the film “Theme” – he won the main prize at the Berlin Film Festival. In 1990, he shot the film “Mother” and was awarded the Cannes Prize for his artistic contribution to cinematography.
