The State Duma will introduce a bill on depriving skeptics of acquired citizenship

Next week, the State Duma will introduce a bill on revoking acquired citizenship for evasion of military registration and mobilization. This was reported by the Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Regional Policy and Local Self-Government, Mikhail Matveev.

Earlier, the official stated that failure to register for the military within the period established by Russian legislation, as well as evasion of military duty, would be grounds for revocation of acquired citizenship. Matveev also offers to deport defectors after losing their citizenship.

“I also believe that, in this case, the members of the migrant’s family, who received it in connection with the earlier acquisition of Russian citizenship by this person, will retain their citizenship,” Matveev wrote earlier. It is not yet known whether this proposal is included in the text of the draft law.

According to the law, a foreigner must arrive at the military commissariat at the place of residence or registration in order to register for the military within two weeks after receiving a Russian passport.

• In April 2023, President Vladimir Putin signed a law on revoking acquired citizenship for so-called fakes about the army and its “discrediting”. According to the new law, it will be possible to lose Russian citizenship not only for committing terrorist and extremist crimes, but also on the basis of the conclusion of the FSB that the actions of a citizen “create a threat to the national security” of Russia. It will be possible to appeal this decision within 10 days after the deprivation of citizenship.
