Djokovic “suffered” due to the absence of his father in the final of the Australian Open
The vacant place of Novak Djokovic’s father Srdjan
Srdjan Djokovic was absent from the box during Novak’s final against Stefanos Tsitsipas at Rod Laver Arena, where Djokovic won a record 22nd Grand Slam title, AFP reports.
Novak Djokovic said that he and his father decided that he would not be on the court to see him win the Australian Open on Sunday, after the dispute over the Russian flag.
The seat next to Djokovic’s mother, which was usually occupied by Srdjan, was empty.
“We both agreed that it would probably be better if he wasn’t there,” Djokovic said after winning the 10th Australian Open championship.
“It is very painful for him and me, because these are special, unique moments that who knows if they will happen again. It was not easy for him. I saw him after the match, and he, let’s say, didn’t feel his best. He was happy to hug me, but I could see that he was a little sad.”
“In the end, we have a happy ending,” added the 35-year-old Djokovic.
Srdjan also decided to skip the semi-finals after facing calls for his suspension from the Grand Slam tournament.
In a video posted on YouTube on Thursday, he poses with a man holding a Russian flag with Vladimir Putin on it.
The video is captioned as follows: “Novak Djokovic’s father made a bold political statement.”
Djokovic later defended his father, saying that the images were “misinterpreted” and meant no harm.
The ambassador of Ukraine to Australia, Vasyl Myroshnychenko, urged to give Srdjan Djokovic a pass to the stadium.
