Crimean Tatar activist Dzhemyl Gafarov, who was previously convicted by a Russian court on charges of involvement in the activities of the Hizb ut-Tahrir organization, died in a pre-trial detention center in Novocherkassk (Rostov region). She is considered a terrorist in Russia.
Gafarov’s death was reported by the chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, Refat Chubarov.
Gafarov was 60 years old. He was diagnosed with kidney failure, and in November 2022 he suffered a heart attack. Gafarov claimed that the administration of the pre-trial detention center refused him medical assistance. The lawyers emphasized that detention in the pre-trial detention center is dangerous for Gafarov’s life.
“He says that he is very sick, he has seizures twice a day… He says that they are trying to give him some medicines, but to take them, he needs a doctor’s consultation about his kidneys, he has kidney failure, and what they give from the heart – it can affect the kidneys. He doesn’t even stand up when he speaks,” lawyer Emil Kurbedinov said in January about Gafarov’s condition. Dzhemyl Gafarov himself said that he was waiting for a stage in the Russian colony.
“Whether I will survive the stage or not is not clear. How will I be staged in months? It will be very difficult to travel,” the convict told lawyer Emil Kurbedinov.
The FSIN of Russia did not publicly comment on the information provided by lawyers and relatives of Gafarov.
On January 11, 2023, the Russian court sentenced the Crimean Tatars Alim Karimov, Seyran Murtaza, Erfan Osmanov, Dzhemily Gafarov and Servet Gaziyev, accused in the so-called case of the Crimean Muslims, to 13 years in prison, finding them guilty of involvement in terrorist activities. Detainee Gafarov was in the annexed Crimea in 2019. The “Memorial” human rights center recognized the Crimean Tatar activists detained then, including Gafarov, as political prisoners.
