Judo’s governing body, the IJF, said ahead of the May 7-14 championships in Qatar that it had “commissioned an independent background check of the athletes and delegates to ensure both their place of work and any interactions on social media regarding propaganda.” .

The IJF added that it “will continue to monitor the situation and conduct further investigations to ensure that all athletes compete ethically and in accordance with the rules and regulations of the sport and the values of judo.”
The IJF allowed judokas from Russia and Belarus to participate in competitions in Doha on the condition that they will perform as individual neutral athletes. The Ukrainian Judo Federation stated that “the majority of the Russian team consists of athletes who are recognized as active servicemen of the armed forces of the Russian Federation.”
Vladimir Putin was the honorary president and international ambassador of the IJF from 2008 until he was removed from the post in 2022.
Last month, the International Olympic Committee recommended that athletes from Russia and Belarus, who are prohibited from participating in international competitions, be allowed to compete as individual neutral athletes.
IOC President Thomas Bach said that the ban would still apply to Russian and Belarusian “athletes who actively support the war,” as well as to “athletes who work under contract with the Russian or Belarusian military or national security services.”
Although the IOC declared that the Russians and Belarusians should be allowed to participate in the Olympic qualification as neutrals, the decision to participate in next year’s Games in Paris has not yet been made.
Most of the places in judo competitions at the 2024 Olympics in Paris will be allocated on the basis of rating points obtained after June 24 of the previous year.
