Ekaterina Duntsova, a journalist from Rzhev, on Wednesday submitted documents to the Central Election Committee for the registration of her initiative group, which supports her nomination as a candidate for the presidency of Russia. The commission must consider the documents within five days. If the CEC registers her initiative, she will be able to start pre-election campaigning and collect signatures to run in the elections.
Duntsova, a former member of the Rzhev City Duma, announced her intention to run for president in November. She stands for the end of the war in Ukraine and against political repressions in Russia.
After registering the initiative group with the CEC, it will need to collect 300,000 signatures in order for its candidacy to be included in the election ballots.
The initiative group of Duntsova’s supporters already includes at least several thousand Russians. Its meetings in different cities of Russia are hampered by police visits and detentions of political supporters.
Pro-Kremlin mass media claim that Duntsova is “financed by fugitive oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky”, but do not present any evidence of their claims. Many Russian opposition figures supported Duntsova, for example, the director of the Anti-Corruption Foundation Ivan Zhdanov and human rights activist Lev Ponomarev.
Also on Wednesday, the Communist Party of the Russian Federation announced the nomination of its candidate. He became Nikolay Kharitonov, who belonged to the Agrarian Party of Russia before switching to the Communists. Kharitonov is the chairman of the committee for the development of the Far East and the Arctic in the State Duma. As RBC clarifies, he already participated in the presidential elections in 2004. Then he managed to get 13.69% of the votes.
- The elections of the head of state will be held in Russia on March 15-17, 2024. As expected, the current President Vladimir Putin put forward his candidacy for them. If he is elected, he will stand for the fifth presidential term.
