The basic function of the brain is to keep our body in a viable state so that we can survive. How does the brain determine whether there is a threat to survival? He constantly predicts events, guided by previous experience. Therefore, our emotions are derived from our experiences.
Every time a certain trigger is triggered, the brain looks for a counterpart in its experience and gives the necessary reaction. Therefore, emotions are not built into our brain from birth, but are constantly created by the brain.
The basic principle of how the brain works is the assumptions it constantly makes in response to a trigger. This, in fact, is the mechanism of the brain. So every time we feel something, we have to be aware that the brain is now making assumptions.
Why does the brain need emotions?
- The first function is evaluative, to quickly give a generalized assessment of the events taking place.
- The second function is motivational, that is, to shape human behavior on the basis of one’s own needs and the correlation of needs with the events taking place.
- The third function is communicative, since emotions are more informative than words spoken by a person.
- The fourth function is signaling, that is, the brain gives signals about whether the surrounding environment is dangerous.
- The fifth function is regulatory, the brain evaluates the situation and gives an understanding of how to react to it.
So, emotions are needed so that the body knows how to react to the situation. Emotions allow us to almost instantly assess the impact of external factors, whether they will bring harm or benefit.
That is why emotional literacy is important for all of us. Our decisions, communication, interaction with other people are only 20% dependent on thinking, while 80% of our behavior is triggered by emotional states and which we are in.
Emotions arise five times faster than a conscious reaction to an event. Therefore, decisions made under the influence of emotions are not very rational, that is, decisions made on the basis of critical and analytical thinking.
Therefore, emotional literacy is needed in order to better understand one’s emotions, the reason for their occurrence and to manage one’s emotional states, preventing irrational decisions, to choose an effective line of behavior. And then emotional perception will not lead us astray.
