Energoatom and Canada’s Cameco have agreed on commercial terms for the supply until 2035 of natural uranium hexafluoride, which will be used in the production of nuclear fuel for Ukrainian nuclear power plants.
This was reported by the press service Energoatom.
The agreement between the companies will be valid for 12 years: from 2024 to 2035. As part of it, Cameco will provide 100% of Energoatom’s uranium hexafluoride needs, including uranium and conversion services, for the reactors of the Rivne, Khmelnytskyi and South Ukrainian NPPs.
According to the president of “Energoatom” Petr Kotin, such an agreement will guarantee a stable supply of nuclear fuel, and he noted that only key commercial terms have been agreed so far. The contract itself is still subject to final approval.
The contract will also provide for the possibility for Cameco to supply the needs of natural uranium hexafluoride for the Zaporizhzhya NPP reactors, as soon as control of the nuclear plant is returned to its legal operator.
As noted in Energoatom, by the end of 2021, the volume of uranium production by the Cameco company was 9% of its global production. Cameco is currently one of the world’s largest producers of natural uranium and a provider of uranium conversion services.
