Estonia expels from the country an employee of the Russian embassy with diplomatic status, who was declared persona non grata, Delfi reports on Tuesday.

The charge d’affaires of the Russian embassy was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, who was handed a corresponding diplomatic note. The attorney was told that Tallinn is not willing to tolerate Russia’s activities “directed against the independence and sovereignty of Estonia.” The agency also called for an end to “hybrid operations coordinated by Russian special services against the security of the Republic of Estonia.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia told the TASS agency that Moscow will respond to Tallinn’s decision by declaring the Russian diplomat persona non grata.

Earlier on March 19, Moldova announced the expulsion of the Russian diplomat. The country’s Foreign Ministry released the Russian ambassador, who was told that one of the employees of the diplomatic mission was declared persona non grata, reports RBC. He was expelled for organizing the Russian presidential election on the territory of the self-proclaimed Transnistria, “contrary to the position of the Moldovan authorities.”

  • Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Western countries have expelled hundreds of Russian diplomats – Russia has usually responded in kind.
