The USA and Japan call not to place nuclear weapons in space

The USA and Japan proposed a resolution to the UN Security Council, which emphasizes that the countries of the world must comply with the treaty prohibiting the placement of nuclear weapons in space. This message appears to be addressed to Russia, notes Reuters, which has the document in its possession.

Washington believes that Moscow is developing a space-based anti-satellite nuclear weapon, the use of which can cause chaos and disruptions in all communications – from military communications to telephony, the agency quotes a source familiar with the matter.

Reuters reminds that Russia is a party to the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, which prohibits putting “any objects with nuclear weapons or any other types of weapons of mass destruction into orbit around the Earth.”

Moscow previously stated that it opposes the deployment of nuclear weapons in space. The leadership of the Ministry of Defense of Russia also denied the development of such a weapon that is not prohibited by an international treaty.

In the document proposed to the UN Security Council, the United States, the only country that used nuclear weapons in war, and Japan, the only country that was subjected to a nuclear attack, called on the treaty participants not to place such weapons in space and not to develop them.

Reports of possible Russian developments appeared after one of the American Republican legislators issued a warning about a “serious threat to national security” on February 14, writes “Voice of America”.
