According to the results of the five months of 2023, Georgia took first place in the supply of still wines to Russia, overtaking Italy. This is reported by “Kommersant” with reference to customs data.
The import of Georgian wines to Russia increased by 63%, exceeding 24 million liters. At the same time, 23.4 million bottles of Italian wines were imported – their supply increased by 31%. Imports from other wine-producing countries – Spain, France and Portugal – also increased by tens of percent.
The interlocutors of “Kommersant” explain the increase in the supply of wines from Georgia by the “absence of problems with payment and logistics”, as well as contracts that Russian retail chains conclude directly with producers. In addition, experts note that there is a zero import duty on Georgian wines and their value is relatively stable.
- In 2022, the Georgian economy reached a ten-year maximum GDP growth rate of 10.1 percent. One of the key reasons was the sharp increase in economic cooperation with Russia. Georgia aspires to join the EU, the growth of economic cooperation causes criticism both from the country’s opposition and from Western countries.
