The European Union is preparing a package of financial assistance to Ukraine in the amount of about 50 billion euros. This is reported by the Bloomberg agency. According to his data, the proposal was prepared by the European Commission. The funds should be used to cover the current expenses of the Ukrainian government, in particular, the payment of pensions and salaries to employees of the budget sector, as well as the restoration of the most important objects damaged as a result of the Russian invasion.
It is expected that the new, largest aid package will be announced on the eve of the international conference in London, dedicated to the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine. It opens in the British capital on June 21.
Unlike previous aid packages for Ukraine from the EU, the 50-billion-dollar package will be financed by contributions from EU member states, and not borrowed from the financial market. It is not yet known whether all EU countries will join this scheme.
The condition for the allocation of funds will be further reforms in Ukraine – especially in the field of fighting corruption and strengthening the rule of law.
As stated on the official website of the EU, an hour after the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the European Union provided Ukraine with economic, humanitarian and military aid in the amount exceeding 67 billion euros. Thus, the volume of the new aid package is only marginally less than the total amount of aid previously provided by the European Union to Ukraine.
