Germany can extradite Basayev’s daughter and grandson who fled the war to the Russian Federation

The German authorities can deport the daughter and eldest grandson of the Chechen field commander Shamil Basayev, who left Russia, as they claim, in order to avoid being forced to go to war in Ukraine. This was reported by the Chechen human rights defender and activist Abubakar Yangulbayev with reference to the Kavkaz.Realii website’s own sources.

Khava Abdulmezhidova and her son are now in a refugee camp. The authorities are considering an application for international protection, but given that they have already been deported from Germany to Russia in the past, it is highly likely that they will be refused.

In 2013, the family of Basaev’s daughter already tried to get international protection in Germany, but was refused and in 2018 was deported to Russia, where she returned to Chechnya. With the beginning of mobilization, her eldest son was forced to sign a subpoena, threatening to send his mother “to peel potatoes and serve Russian soldiers in Ukraine” if he refuses, the human rights activist claims. To avoid being sent to war, the family arrived in Germany via Turkey and Croatia.

“The authorities of Chechnya wanted to make a show out of sending Shamil Basayev’s grandson to the front, this is a loud news story. He refused, then they threatened to force his mother. While the documents were being drawn up, they left the republic,” explained Yangulbaev.

Another reason for deportation may be that, according to international agreements, the family had to apply for asylum in the first country of entry into the European Union – Croatia. The site Kavkaz.Realii wrote that in early November, several dozen natives of Chechnya were detained in Croatia – they complained about being forced to sign a refusal to apply for asylum. The country’s court refused to grant international protection to a number of Chechen refugees.

• Shamil Basayev is a Chechen field commander, one of the leaders of the armed struggle for the independence of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria and military operations against Russia in the North Caucasus. He organized a series of terrorist attacks in the Stavropol Territory, North Ossetia, Dagestan, and Moscow, in which hundreds of people became victims. He was included in the terrorist lists of the United Nations, the European Union, and the US State Department. He was killed in 2006.
• Said-Huseyin Yamadaev, who was recruited to PMC “Wagner” during the war in Ukraine, was killed – the son of the former Chechen field commander, member of the State Duma and Hero of Russia Ruslan Yamadaev. In the past, the once influential family of the Yamadayevs was considered political rivals and personal enemies of the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov – a series of deaths occurred in this clan over the past decade.
