Gonzales, the journalist arrested in Poland, is connected to the GRU

Arrested in Poland in February 2022 on charges of working for the Russian GRU military intelligence, the Spanish journalist Pablo Gonzalez (according to his Russian passport – Pavel Rubtsov) flew in the company of Sergey Turbin, whom the publication “Agentstvo” calls a Russian intelligence officer. The “Agency” found this out by studying the data of the air ticket reservation database of the Russian company “Syrena-Travel” hacked by Ukrainian hackers.

In particular, on June 16, 2017, the passports of Rubtsov and Turbin were issued tickets of the S7 company from Moscow to St. Petersburg and back with one purchase.

According to the “Agency”, referring to leaks from Russian databases, Turbin repeatedly indicated his place of residence in a house in Moscow at 50 Narodnogo opolcheniya street. The Military Academy of the Ministry of Defense, better known as the “GRU Conservatory”, is located there. This address is in his documents indicated a number of employees of Russian military intelligence. At the same time, in reality, according to “Agentstvo”, Turbin lived at other addresses connected with the GRU in Moscow. These data, according to the investigators, suggest that he is an employee of the special service.

  • Pablo Gonzalez, whose family moved to Russia during the Spanish Civil War, was born in Moscow in 1982. At the age of nine, he left with his mother for Spain. He was detained in February 2022 by the Polish special services and accused of working for the GRU. Later it turned out that he has a Russian passport in the name of Rubtsov (this is his father’s surname). As “Agentstvo” found out in May, Gonzalez-Rubtsov was in the circle of Boris Nemtsov’s daughter Zhanna Nemtsova for several years and wrote detailed reports on the activities of her foundation.
  • Since 2014, Gonzalez began working as a journalist, covering the annexation of Crimea and the Russian invasion of Donbass. He collaborated with the Spanish newspaper Público, the EFE agency, laSexta TV channel, Voice of America, DW and the Basque publications Naiz, Gara.
  • Shortly before February 24, 2022 – the beginning of Russia’s war against Ukraine – the Security Service of Ukraine demanded that Gonzalez leave the country. Four days later, Gonzales was detained in the Polish city of Przemyśl, near the border with Ukraine. The Polish authorities did not comment on the arrest in detail, only saying that the journalist, according to them, worked for the Russian military intelligence (GRU).
