Great Britain opposes the participation of Russian or Belarusian athletes at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, the official representative of the Prime Minister said on Wednesday, reports PA Media, reports
The press secretary said that Great Britain “very clearly” made it clear to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that it does not want the participation of Russia and Belarus, PA reports.
Russia “should be treated as a rogue state, and it should not have the opportunity to legitimize its illegal war in Ukraine,” added the representative.
“We, and many other countries, have always been unequivocal about this, and we want to make sure that we continue to speak about it with one voice.”
Last week, the IOC announced that Russian and Belarusian athletes will act as neutral athletes if they participate in the Olympics.
The IOC outlined a multi-stage plan for the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in the 2024 Summer Games in Paris and the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milan, asserting that “not a single athlete can be prevented from competing only because of his passport.”
Meanwhile, the IOC announced that it would extend its sanctions against Russian and Belarusian state officials and ban sports events organized by the federations of both countries.
