Militants of the radical group Hamas, which is included in the list of terrorist organizations of the USA and the EU, took no less than 64 hostages to the Gaza Strip, The Washington Post reports.
Journalists analyzed hundreds of photos and videos from the scene and came to the conclusion that at least 49 hostages looked like civilians, nine of them were children. 11 people looked like soldiers of the Israeli army. In four more cases, journalists could not establish whether the hostage was a military or a civilian.
As the newspaper notes, neither the Israeli government nor the Hamas group has reported the exact number of people taken to the Gaza Strip. The Israeli authorities said that according to their estimates, the militants took 100 to 150 people hostage.
Journalists of The Washington Post calculated that a total of 106 people were captured by Hamas militants. Most of them looked like civilians, and only 14 looked like Israeli soldiers. In 29 cases, journalists could not establish whether a person is a civilian or a military person. Among the captured were 11 children. The publication notes that the real number of people taken hostage may be higher.
On Friday, Hamas announced the death of 13 hostages as a result of shelling from Israel. It is confirmed that there are foreigners among them.
