Historian Yuriy Dmitriev, who is in a high-security prison in Mordovia, was again placed in a prison cell. According to the Human Rights Society “Memorial”, after taking medication, 67-year-old Dmitriev became ill in the cell. He felt dizzy, and he sat down on the bunk. The inspector wrote a report that Dmitriev “was in the sleeping place during the day.”

Dmitriev was placed in a detention center for 15 days – this is the maximum possible term. This is his sixth disciplinary action. As the Sota publication specifies, Dmitriev spent a total of about a month in detention in the period from September to December 2022. All decisions on disciplinary sanctions were appealed, but the court did not side with the prisoner.

  • Dmitriev was convicted on the charge of sexual violence against his adopted daughter. He did not admit guilt. The daughter also declared the father’s innocence. “Memorial” considers Dmitriev a political prisoner and connects his case with the fact that in 1997 he found mass graves of repressed citizens of the USSR in the Sandarmok forest tract, and also compiled lists of memories of repressed residents of Karelia.
