How a woman from Kharkiv opened a dental office thanks to state support

“I was an employee and I had no experience of running a business. Before, I was an ordinary doctor and never touched organizational aspects,” says Olena Finkevich.
In Kharkiv, she worked as a dentist in a clinic and had 13 years of medical experience. After the start of the war in 2022, the woman was forced to leave for Lithuania. After some time spent abroad, thoughts began to appear about returning to Ukraine and starting to work for myself.
“Some patients wrote to me, wondering when I would return to Ukraine and resume appointments. I was not going to return to the clinic because of an unpleasant situation during my dismissal, so I considered various options,” Olena Finkevich admits.
Her friends advised her to start her own practice, but fear prevailed, because there are many unknowns in her own business, it is not clear in what amounts the start-up capital should be.
Once, scrolling through the feed on Instagram, she saw an announcement of the Vlasna Sprava grant program on her friend’s page, so she decided to apply for participation. The entrepreneur admits that it was not difficult to write a grant application and describe the business idea. She did it in one evening.
“I had job offers abroad, but I refused because I wanted to return to Ukraine. All this gave me such an emotional boost that I wrote a draft version of the grant application in one evening,” says the founder of the office.
But even when she found out that she had won the grant, she hesitated until the end whether it was worth starting. “I was afraid that suddenly I wouldn’t be able to cope or something would go wrong, there is still a war in the country, I was afraid of running out of patients,” admits the entrepreneur.
At that time, she had already returned to Ukraine and lived in Kyiv for some time. She was still afraid to return to Kharkiv because of security issues. In Kyiv, in order not to sit without a job, she got a job as a dentist. And this decision ultimately influenced the decision to open my own business.
“I worked for a month or two and realized that I didn’t want someone to manage me, to dictate my rules when I should work and when to rest. I didn’t agree with the organization of work and the materials I had to work with,” says Olena Finkevich.
