Human rights defender “Memorial” Bahrom Khamroev announced the beating in the prison

Bakhrom Khamroev, a human rights defender of “Memorial” who was convicted on charges of terrorist activity, announced that he was beaten in prison No. 2 of the city of Vladimir, better known as “Vladimir Central”.

According to his wife, who received a letter from Khamroev, the human rights defender demanded from him to accept five complaints about the conditions of detention and violations of the rights of prisoners, which are allowed by FSIN employees, after which they used force on Khamroev.

“He was beaten on the legs, in the groin, on the kidneys, and from the blow on the head he lost consciousness,” said the wife of the human rights defender, adding that the doctors refused to fix the injuries, but the representative of the prosecutor’s office did.

Also, according to Zuhra Khamroeva, the imprisoned Muslims, having learned about the beating, demanded to stop the bullying, but as a result, they themselves were beaten.

According to all these facts, Khamroev’s lawyer appealed to the Investigative Committee. The department started an investigation.

• A member of the human rights center “Memorial” Bahrom Khamroev managed the legal and social support fund for migrants. He was detained in February 2022 on charges of “organizing the activities of a terrorist organization” and “public calls for terrorism.” According to the FSB, Khamroev posted on social networks materials related to the activities of the banned in Russia religious movement of the Islamist sect “Hizb ut-Tahrir”. In May 2023, the court sentenced the human rights defender to 14 years in prison.
• The activities of Hizb ut-Tahrir are legal in many countries of the world, but since 2003 it has been banned in Russia, where the movement was recognized as a terrorist organization. Russian authorities have already initiated hundreds of criminal cases of terrorism against alleged members of Hizb ut-Tahrir, mainly against Crimean Tatars living on the territory of the annexed peninsula. At the same time, cases are often opened only on the basis of searches of religious literature. The Crimean Tatars themselves believe that they are being persecuted solely for disagreeing with the annexation of Crimea.
