Hungary again blocked the European aid package to Ukraine

At a meeting in Luxembourg on Monday, the ministers of foreign affairs of the countries of the European Union could not agree on the allocation of the next tranche of aid to Ukraine in the amount of 500 million euros. Hungary once again demands guarantees from Kyiv to lift restrictions from its largest OTR bank. They were imposed because of the bank’s alleged cooperation with the Russian authorities. At the moment, the Ukrainian authorities have suspended the inclusion of the bank in the list of “war sponsors”, but Budapest wants to be sure that the sanctions will not be imposed again.
Such cases have already happened: in June, Ukraine excluded a number of Greek shipping companies from the list at the request of Athens, in order to achieve the adoption of the 11th package of EU sanctions. After accepting the package, Kyiv returned the carriers to the registry in August.
The aid package to Ukraine in the amount of 500 million euros was supposed to become the eighth tranche from the program of the European Peace Fund. In July 2023, the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, Peter Szijjarto, stated that “Hungary will not support any financing within the EU for the supply of weapons to Ukraine” until Kiev excludes OTP Bank from the list of war sponsors.
