Turkish President Recep Erdogan signed the protocol on Sweden’s accession to NATO. This was reported in the ego administration. The document was submitted for ratification to the country’s parliament – the Great National Assembly. The date of the parliamentary session on this issue was not announced.
Sweden, as well as Finland, which previously maintained neutrality, applied to join NATO in 2022, shortly after the start of Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine. Finland became a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in April 2023. Sweden’s accession to NATO was blocked by Turkey and Hungary.
Ankara demanded from Stockholm the extradition of activists of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, whom it considers terrorists and who received political asylum in Sweden. Also, Turkey strongly condemns incidents involving the burning of the Koran and other anti-Islamic actions of Swedish activists. However, in July of this year, Erdogan said that his country would no longer prevent Sweden from joining the alliance.
- In order for Sweden to join NATO, its application must be approved by all members of the alliance. Now NATO includes 31 states.
