Tech giant IBM plans to suspend hiring for positions that may be replaced by artificial intelligence in the coming years – the head of the company sees that about 7,800 jobs could be filled by a robot.

Chief Executive Officer of International Business Machines Arvind Krishna said this in an interview Bloomberg.

He said the company plans to suspend hiring for back-office positions, such as human resources, to be suspended or slowed.

In his opinion, about 26,000 employees work in positions that are not related to communication with clients. “I can easily predict that 30% of them will be replaced by artificial intelligence and automation within five years,” he said.

This would mean the loss of approximately 7,800 jobs. According to a representative of IBM, part of the reductions will be related to the refusal to fill positions that are vacated due to retirement.

According to Krishna, tasks such as sending employment confirmation letters or moving employees between departments will likely be fully automated. Some HR functions, such as assessing workforce composition and performance, are unlikely to be replaced within the next decade, he added.

Currently, IBM has about 260,000 employees.
