IFJ suspended the membership of the Union of Journalists of Russia

The International Federation of Journalists suspended the membership of the Union of Journalists of Russia. The decision was made on Wednesday at an unscheduled session of the federation. The main reason for the suspension was the opening of branches of the Union of Journalists of Russia in the territories occupied by Russia in four regions of Ukraine. Earlier, the International Federation demanded that the Russian Union of Journalists close them, but was refused.

The president of the International Federation of Journalists, Dominique Pardali, said that the actions of the Russian Union violate the principles of solidarity and sow discord in the professional environment. Earlier, the unions of journalists in Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland said that they were ready to leave IFZ, including because of the presence of Russian participants in it. At the end of January, the IFJ launched the procedure of suspension and subsequent termination of the membership of the Union of Journalists of Russia.

Dominique Pardali emphasized that the Federation will continue to support Russian independent journalists in Russia and abroad.

The head of the Union of Journalists of Russia, Vladimir Solovyov, confirmed that he had received a notification about the suspension of his organization’s membership in the IFJ.

  • The International Federation of Journalists unites more than 600,000 media workers from 140 countries around the world. This is the world’s largest organization of professional media workers.
  • The Union of Journalists of Russia has been part of the IFJ since 1995.
