The State Duma passed a law allowing to hide official statistics

The State Duma of Russia adopted in the third reading a law allowing the government not to disclose official statistical data. The Federation Council also approved it on February 22. In the justification of the draft law, it is indicated that the government will be able to promptly limit access to statistical information that “has geopolitical significance.” The law does not specify exactly what data can have such meaning.
According to the current federal legislation, official statistics provided by Rosstat are open. It can be provided to interested users or distributed publicly. Restrictions may apply only to data related to bank, commercial, tax, medical or attorney confidentiality.
In addition, the law allows organizations in the so-called “DPR” and “LPR”, as well as parts of the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions of Ukraine, which Russia considers to be its territories, to provide statistical data in paper rather than electronic form. Such a resolution will be in effect during the “transitional period” – until the beginning of 2026.
The law will enter into force from the day of its official publication.
