In 2022, a record number of Russian citizens left for Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Mongolia, and Armenia over the past five years. This follows from the data of the Russian border service.
The peak of departures came in the third quarter. This may be connected with the announcement of mobilization in Russia in September, when many Russians, wishing to avoid conscription, left the country.
The publication “Meduza”, having analyzed the figures provided by the border service, concludes that emigration to Mongolia per hour increased by 989%, to Georgia – by 475%, to Kazakhstan – by 234%, to Tajikistan – by 212%, to Uzbekistan – by 99% . In addition, the number of flights of Russians to Israel in 2022 doubled and exceeded 100,000.
The statistics take into account only the number of border crossings, which does not necessarily concern emigration: this also includes vacations, for business and personal purposes, and many Russians soon return to their families.
However, “Novaya Gazeta” quotes the opinion of demographers Yulia Florinskaya and Alexey Raksha, who estimate last year’s wave of emigration at 400-800 thousand people. Other specialists call numbers up to a million. Of the 2022 emigrants, more than 100,000 remained in Georgia, and at least 100,000 remained in Kazakhstan. 50-100 thousand flew to Serbia, about 40 thousand to Armenia. About 35,000 Russian citizens left for Israel, Kyrgyzstan, and EU countries.
