At the end of 2022, Russia took second place in terms of the number of Schengen visas received, second only to Turkey.
In the year of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russians submitted more than 687,000 Schengen visa applications – 150,000 more than in 2021. 90% of them were approved, thus Russians received more than 618 thousand Schengen visas.
Spain issued the most visas to Russians – more than 158,000, the number of refusals was 4.5%. Many Russians received Schengen visas at the Finnish, Italian and Greek consulates. In September 2022, Finland banned the entry of Russian tourists, in July 2023 the Russian authorities announced the closure of the Finnish consulate in St. Petersburg.
At the same time, the lowest percentage of visa refusals to Russians was recorded in Poland – 0.75%, Latvia – 0.8%, the Netherlands – 1.1% and Lithuania – 2.3%. Now all these countries have suspended the issuance of visas to Russians.
- In September 2022, due to Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine, the European Union suspended the simplified visa regime for Russians. The visa fee has increased from 35 to 80 euros, the number of documents required for submitting a visa application has increased.
