In 2022, Russians paid more than 150 million rubles for “discrediting”

Last year, Russian citizens were fined a total of 151,257,500 rubles under the article on the so-called discrediting of the army. This follows from the report of the judicial department at the Supreme Court.
According to the statistics provided by Medazon, in 2022, the courts received 5,622 administrative cases of “discrediting” military personnel. For them, 4,439 fines were imposed and one warning issued.
According to “Mediazone”, by the middle of April 2023, district courts had already received more than 6,500 reports on the same article.
The article on the discrediting of the Russian army appeared in the administrative and criminal codes of Russia shortly after the start of its military invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. In March 2023, the punishments were toughened.
Russian courts consider the dissemination of any information about the war that differs from the official position of the Ministry of Defense, as well as anti-war statements, calls for peace, and, for example, the use of the word “war” instead of the recommended term “special military operation” to be “discrediting”. For them, Russians face fines of up to 50,000 rubles for citizens and up to 500,000 rubles for legal entities.
In the event of a repeated violation, a criminal case may be initiated, which provides for imprisonment for a term of up to seven years.
