In Chukotka, the only Internet cable built in 2022 for more than seven billion rubles was damaged by a fishing trawl.

As reported by the press service of the government of the Chukotka Autonomous District, taking into account the difficult climatic conditions and the “limited period of navigation in the Bering Sea”, the repair will be carried out from October 12 to 23.

During the repair work, access to the Internet will be provided through “reserve satellite resources, the bandwidth of which is limited”, the quality of communication will decrease significantly, the authorities warned the residents of Chukotka. Rostelecom reported that they will not charge a subscriber fee for communication services while repairs are underway.

The cable of the underwater fiber-optic communication line with a length of more than two thousand kilometers began to work at the beginning of this year. Before that, Chukotka, as RIA Novosti writes, remained the last region of Russia with satellite Internet.

On October 8, an underwater Internet cable between Iturup and Kunashir on the Kuril Islands was damaged, the Telegram channel “Govorit NeMoskva” reports. Local residents have been without Internet and mobile communications for three days. Some people have started to run out of cash, and it is impossible to withdraw it through an ATM or pay for the necessary goods by card.
