The authorities of the Netherlands are investigating Yango, a taxi ordering application owned by the Yandex company, due to fears that with its help, Russian special services are collecting data about users in Europe.
The start of the investigation was confirmed to Bloomberg by a representative of the Dutch data protection agency. Earlier, the authorities of Finland and Norway expressed concerns about the possibility of transferring data on European users of the FSB.
On September 1, a decree of the Russian government entered into force in Russia, according to which the FSB must have access to data on users of taxi services. On August 8, “Meduza” published an investigation in which it was claimed that “Yandex” stores data about users’ taxi trips, including abroad, where the service works under other names, on Russian servers, and thus the data should fall under under the decree on the possibility of access to them by the FSB. In connection with this, the Finnish authorities issued a special decree that from September 1, no Yango user data should be transferred to Russia. The Norwegian authorities made the same decision. At the same time, according to the authorities of these countries, the Russian decree should not apply to the data of EU citizens, and if Yango transferred the data to Russia, this may be a violation of European data protection legislation.
Yandex denies that the FSB will get access to information about trips abroad. “Data about trips can only be obtained by the law enforcement agencies of the country where the trip was made, according to the procedures prescribed in local laws,” the statement of the press service of “Yandex.Taksy” cites “Dozhd”.
