In Dagestan, the stadium named after Elena Isinbayeva will be renamed

The head of Dagestan, Sergey Melikov, declared the need to rename the stadium in Makhachkala, which now bears the name of Elena Isinbaeva, a two-time Olympic pole vault champion with Dagestan roots, reports Kavkaz.Realii.
The reason was Isinbayeva’s move to Spain and her application, in which she called herself a “person of peace.” Previously, Isinbayeva was a confidant of Russian President Vladimir Putin, she holds the military rank of major.
Melikov claims that the “Trud” stadium, which was named after Isynbayeva in 2017, was renamed “hastily, without taking into account the opinion of the citizens.” The official emphasized that the athlete never connected “her life, her past and future” with Dagestan.
At the same time, Melikov called “the athlete’s latest statements made from abroad” as a “reason” for renaming the stadium and a “serious signal”. According to Melykov, it will be correct if the new name of the object is chosen by the Dagestanis themselves. He instructed the Republican Ministry of Sports and the Makhachkala City Hall to organize this work.
Earlier, it also became known that Isynbayeva will resume her work at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) after an inspection of her. The IOC checked Isinbayeva’s statements about the war against Ukraine. Telling about the completion of the check on social networks, Isinbayeva wrote: “I am a man of the world, I have always been and I will remain!”.
