In Iran, two people were executed on charges of blasphemy

On Monday, Iranian authorities executed two people on charges of blasphemy. They were sentenced to death for insulting the holy places and the Prophet Muhammad. The court found signs of blasphemy in their posts on the Internet.
As reported by the Iranian news agency “Mizan” with reference to the press service of the court, Yusef Mehrad and Sardolla Fazeli-Zare had “anti-Islamic” accounts in social networks. In particular, their messages of blasphemy against the Prophet, his mother and imams, and propaganda of atheism are mentioned. Mehrad published a video of the burning of the Koran on social networks.
The court believes that Mehrad moderated at least 15 anti-religious channels on the Internet. In Fazela-Zare, they found subscriptions to these channels in their phones. Both defendants admitted their guilt.
The human rights group Iran Human Rights sharply condemned the execution of Mehrad and Fazela-Zare. “This is not only a barbaric act of medieval cruelty, but also an attempt on freedom of expression,” said its director, Mahmud Amiri-Moghaddam.
According to estimates by Iran Human Rights, more than 200 death sentences have been carried out in Iran since the beginning of this year, compared to 582 last year. Among them, death sentences were handed down to participants of civil protests held in Germany after the death of Mahsa Amina.
