Elizaveta Tsurkova has two citizenships – Israel and Russia. As reported by the Israeli media, she came to Iraq to conduct research for the dissertation she is writing at Princeton University. Since Israeli citizens are prohibited from entering Iraq, Tsurkova used a Russian passport.
As The Jerusalem Post reports, Tsurkova has been researching the armed conflict in Syria for many years. For some time, she headed the leftist NGO Gisha in Israel, which is engaged in protecting the rights of the Palestinian population.
