Elena Milashina was diagnosed with multiple fractures of the hands

Novaya Gazeta journalist Yelena Milashyna was examined in a Moscow clinic after the attack on her and her lawyer Alexander Nemov in Chechnya. Doctors diagnosed Mylashina with a closed craniocerebral injury, up to 14 hand fractures and multiple soft tissue injuries. “Consciousness is clear, the condition is stable,” reports the publication “Novaya Gazeta. Evropa” with reference to doctors. Nemov’s condition is not reported.

Meanwhile, the Investigative Committee for Chechnya opened a criminal case on the fact of the attack – almost two days after the incident. The case was instituted under the articles of causing harm to health of light and medium severity.

The attack on journalist Elena Milashyna and lawyer Alexander Nemov happened on the morning of Tuesday, July 4, when they arrived in Grozny on a business trip. The taxi in which Milashyna and Nemov were traveling from the airport to the city center was stopped by unknown persons. They forcibly put the journalist and the lawyer in one of their cars, drove them to a nearby ravine, where they began to severely beat her. Nemova was stabbed in the leg, and Milashina was specially beaten on the fingers, the thunderbolt would amputate them.

The victims of the attack noted that the criminals were only interested in equipment and official documents. They were not interested in other material values ​​- in particular, 13 thousand rubles that were with Milashina and bank cards remained untouched. The journalist is sure that the attack on her and lawyer Nemov is directly related to their professional activities on the territory of Chechnya.

• Elena Milashyna and Alexander Nemov flew to Chechnya for the sentencing of Zarema Musaeva, the mother of Chechen activists and critics of Ramzan Kadyrov, the Yangulbayev brothers, and the wife of judge Sayda Yangulbayev (they are all outside Russia).
• In January 2022, policemen from Chechnya kidnapped Musaeva in Nizhny Novgorod, where she lived, and forcibly transported her to Grozny. Later, a criminal case was opened against her: she allegedly pounced on the precinct officer who was compiling the report and “almost left his eye,” claimed the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov. A few more days later, Musaeva was charged with fraud. Ramzan Kadyrov stated that some members of the Yangulbaev family “call for terrorism and extremism”, that they should be detained and punished, “and if they resist, they will be destroyed as accomplices of terrorists”.
• On Tuesday, a court in Grozny sentenced Zarem Musaev to five and a half years in prison. “Memorial” recognized Musaeva as a political prisoner.
