Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the headquarters of the troop group in Rostov-on-Don. About this the Ministry of Defense, the Kremlin and Russian state news agencies reported.
In the RIA Novosti video, Putin is met by the Chief of the General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, whose extradition was demanded by the founder of PMC “Wagner” Yevgeny Prigozhin during the mutiny.
The last time Putin held a similar meeting in Rostov-on-Don was in March. At the same time, the president visited Mariupol, captured by Russian troops.
On June 23–24, military facilities in Rostov-on-Don, including the headquarters of the Southern Military District, were captured by mercenaries of PMC “Wagner”. After that, Gerasimov did not appear in public for a long time, which gave rise to various rumors about the fate of the Chief of the General Staff.
At the end of June, many pro-government Telegram channels wrote that General Mikhail Teplinsky could replace Gerasimov as the commander of the operation against Ukraine. But later there were reports that, on the contrary, Teplinsky fell into disgrace. Also, for criticizing Gerasimov, the commander of the 58th Army, General Ivan Popov, was removed from his post.
