Four police officers were arrested in Kazakhstan in connection with the torture of jazz pianist Vykram Ruzakhunov from Kyrgyzstan. This is reported by Radio Azattyk with reference to the musician himself.

According to the victim, one of the detainees gave an incriminating statement. The criminal case was transferred to the Prosecutor General’s Office of Kazakhstan. According to the materials of the case, as reported, dozens of citizens suffered from the actions of the police, except for Ruzakhunov.

In January 2022, during the mass protests in Kazakhstan, a number of state media broadcast a video of a detained foreigner who said that he allegedly flew from Kyrgyzstan for $200 to participate in a rally in Almaty. After the publication of the recording, residents of Kyrgyzstan recognized Vykram Ruzakhunov, a well-known jazz pianist in their country, as the detainee.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kyrgyzstan reported that Ruzakhunov bought a ticket to Almaty back in December, long before the protests began. On January 2, he actually flew to Kazakhstan to conduct concert programs, after which his relatives lost contact with him. Kyrgyzstan sent a note of protest to Kazakhstan.

Later it turned out that after the detention, which he calls illegal, Ruzakhunov was severely beaten, and that he recorded the video of the incriminating testimony under torture.

After the musician was released and taken to Bishkek, doctors diagnosed him with a concussion and rib fractures. Ruzakhunov had to undergo an operation in the hospital.

  • Mass protests turned into riots in Kazakhstan in January 2022. Groups of people with weapons in their hands began to attack government buildings. The authorities of Kazakhstan called it a coup attempt in which some foreign forces participated. Subsequently, persons from the entourage of former President Nursultan Nazarbayev were accused of involvement in the events. More than 200 people died under various circumstances as a result of the riots.
