In Kazakhstan, the rebellion was called an internal affair of the Russian Federation

In Kazakhstan, the government was instructed to prepare for possible crisis situations against the background of the demand for armed rebellion in Russia. On June 25, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held an extraordinary meeting of the country’s Security Council, where the heads of various departments read reports on the measures being taken “in accordance with the situation in the Russian Federation,” reports Sibir.Realii.

The meeting was attended by the Prime Minister, the Prosecutor General, the chairmen of the National Security Committee, the Minister of Defense, Internal Affairs and Foreign Affairs. In an official statement, Tokaev specified that what happened in Russia was an “internal matter” of the neighboring country, but, in his words, Kazakhstanis “concerned the situation in a friendly country with which Kazakhstan has the longest border in the world.” The president clarified that he is closely monitoring what is happening in Russia in Astana.

The day before, the President of Kazakhstan also called the demand for armed rebellion by PMC “Wagner” and its head Yevgeny Prigozhin “an internal matter of Russia.” Tokayev’s press service claimed that the head of state was personally informed about the situation by Russian President Vladimir Putin during a telephone conversation. At the same time, there is no mention of this conversation on the Kremlin website.

• In January 2022, Russian troops and units of other CSTO countries were briefly deployed to Kazakhstan at Tokayev’s request against the background of mass unrest in that country. They did not take part in the clashes and soon left the country, the president of Kazakhstan then thanked the partners for their help. Whether Kazakhstan’s possible assistance to the Russian authorities was discussed during Tokayev’s conversation with Putin on June 24 is not reported.
