A court in Kyrgyzstan sentenced a 27-year-old citizen of the country, Beknazar Borugul uulu, to five years in prison for participating in the war in Ukraine as part of the Russian PMC “Wagner”.

The article on which the mercenary was tried is “participation of a Kyrgyz citizen in armed conflicts or military actions on the territory of a foreign state.”

Beknazar Borugul uulu was detained in August 2023, three weeks after returning to his family. It is known that he was recruited to PMC “Wagner” when he was serving a sentence in one of the Russian colonies.

It is noted that this is the second known case when a citizen of the country is tried in Kyrgyzstan for participating in the war in Ukraine. Last May, 31-year-old Askar Kubanychbek uulu was sentenced to 10 years in prison, but later the Supreme Court overturned this decision and sent the case for a new trial.

  • On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree allowing foreigners fighting on Russia’s side in Ukraine to become Russian citizens. According to the decree, citizenship will be granted to foreign citizens who signed a contract for service in the army or in military formations during the period of the Russian invasion. The immediate family members of war participants will also be able to obtain citizenship.
