On Thursday, February 15, amendments to the law “On road traffic” will come into effect in Latvia, allowing the confiscation of cars with Russian registration numbers. Until February 14, Latvian owners of such cars were obliged to register them locally or take them out of the country.

In addition to the confiscation of vehicles with Russian license plates, their owners will have to pay a fine in the amount of 750 to 2,000 euros, said the Minister of Internal Affairs of Latvia Ryhards Kozlovskis.

An exception will be made for diplomatic cars and for those traveling through Latvia in transit and staying on its territory for no more than a day. Transit through Latvia must be declared electronically in advance by the car owner.

As reported by Delfi, confiscated cars can be handed over to Ukraine as a gesture of solidarity.

Amendments to the law on road traffic in Latvia were adopted in November last year. Even earlier, in September, Riga banned cars with Russian license plates from entering the country. Last fall, all EU countries bordering Russia adopted similar decisions.
