The Investigative Committee of Russia needed to arrest economist Konstantin Sonin and politician Leonid Gozman in absentia for an article about fakes about the Russian army. “Mediazona” learned about this.

Russian courts recognize reports about the war in Ukraine that do not coincide with the version of the Ministry of Defense of Russia as fakes.

The case against Sonin, the former vice-rector of HSE and NES, a professor at the University of Chicago, was opened in March 2023, and two months later he was declared wanted in Russia. The reason was posts in Telegram about the actions of the Russian military in Ukraine, published from April to July 2022.

In a conversation with Radio Svoboda, Sonyn then suggested that the case was opened because of publications about the deaths of civilians in Buch and the shelling of the drama theater in Mariupol.

The case against opposition politician Leonid Gozman became known in December 2023. The reason for the case, according to TASS, was Gozman’s publications on Facebook and Telegram about the leadership of Russia and the Russian army.

In September 2022, the politician was twice arrested for 15 days for old posts on Facebook. After that he left Russia.

The court in Moscow will issue a decision on both defendants on February 20.

  • After the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Russian authorities started persecution for anti-war speeches and statements. According to “OVD-Info” estimates, at least 840 people have been prosecuted for their anti-war stance in Russia, including at least 250 against them in an article about fakes about the Russian army.
