In Russia, the second wave of VPN blocking using one of the most common WireGuard protocols has been registered, Agentstvo.Novosti reports.

The publication refers to the data of the “Technical Support Service ON COMMUNICATIONS” project, which is engaged in the study of Internet blocking in Russia and answers users’ questions on this topic. “This week, the number of complaints about blocking that we receive has tripled. If in mid-September we received 2-3 appeals a day, now there are dozens of them a day,” – said in “Slub”.

The monitoring project noted that complaints about blocking were received from users of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sverdlovsk, Yaroslavl, Rostov, Lipetsk, Kaluga, Penza, Samara, Ryazan, Belgorod, Voronezh, Vologda and Vladimir regions. Problems arose among subscribers of the so-called “big four” – MTS, Beelaina, Megafon, Tele2, as well as among subscribers of other telecommunications operators.

The executive director of the “Internet Protection Society” Mikhail Klymarev confirmed the new wave of blocking to the “Agency”.

The first wave of VPN blocking in Russia began in early August and subsided by the end of the same month. Then they blocked not only WireGuard, but also other protocols – OpenVPN and IPSec, writes the building.

  • Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russia has blocked hundreds of thousands of sites, including social networks Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, as well as sites of independent mass media, including Radio Liberty. To bypass the blocks, users use VPN services.
