In Russia, they can block “Wikipedia” under a new law prohibiting the popularization of VPNs. Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications Anton Gorelkin wrote about this in his Telegram channel.

According to him, the article in the Internet encyclopedia about VPN services has all the features that allow Roskomnadzor to introduce a block. At the same time, Gorelkin noted that there are other reasons for blocking the resource. “The regulator still has a number of claims, many of which have already been ruled on. There are legal grounds for blocking Wikipedia, it remains to be done so that it does not cause severe discomfort to users,” the deputy wrote.

On March 1, a ban on “advertising or popularization of blocking bypass” came into force in Russia. Roskomnadzor will be able to block not only instructions for installing a VPN, but also calls to use such tools. There is no direct ban on the use of circumvention methods in Russia. Liability, accordingly, is also not provided for, notes “Novaya Gazeta. Evropa”.

  • Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russia has blocked more than a million websites, including social networks Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, as well as websites of non-state media, including Radio Liberty. Russians use VPN anonymizers to bypass blocking. The demand for them has grown sharply since the beginning of the war. At the moment, more VPNs are used only in China than in Russia.
