In the Federal Republic of Germany, Alexey and Yulia Navalny were awarded the “Prize for Freedom of Mass Media”

Alexey and Yulia Navalny are nominated for the German “Prize for Freedom of Media”.

The award will be presented at the annual Ludwig Erhard Summit on April 17-19 at Lake Tegernsee.

Russian opposition politician Aleksey Navalny (posthumously) and his widow will receive an award for “courage shown in the resistance movement”, for “brave and non-violent struggle against the brutal dictatorship in Russia”. The rationale for the nomination states: “They are the faces of the best, new, free and democratic Russia. They are heroes of the resistance of our time, who are ready to sacrifice their lives for the betterment of our world.”

Yulia Navalnaya will accept the award in her own name and on behalf of her late husband. The chairman of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU), Friedrich Mertz, will deliver a ceremonial speech during the award ceremony.

The organizer of the annual political and economic summit is the media group Weimer Media Group (WMG). The “Media Freedom Award” was established by the publishers of the group, Christiane Goetz-Weimer and Wolfram Weimer. The award is given to public figures who have shown themselves in an extraordinary way in the struggle for freedom of opinion, political dialogue and democracy.

In 2023, Garry Kasparov became the laureate of the award. Previously, it was awarded to Vladimir Zelensky and Mikhail Gorbachev.

Along with the presentation of the prize, one of the important events of the summit every hour is the discussion “arena” of the leaders of the political parties of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Representatives of the right-wing populist party Alternative for Germany, the Left Party, and the newly formed Sara Wagenknecht Union have not been invited to the event this year. The organizers of the summit emphasized that they do not give a stage to extremists, enemies of democracy and opponents of the European Union. “The Ludwig Erhard Summit is an open platform of a broad center,” Christiane Goetz-Weimer and Wolfram Weimer emphasized on the eve of the summit.
