According to a report commissioned by the Ministry of Oil, India should ban vehicles in cities with a population of more than a million people and cities with a high level of pollution by 2027 as part of the country’s transition to a green economy. This is reported by Bloomberg.

According to a report compiled by a committee headed by former Indian oil minister Tarun Kapur, the recommended ban concerns four-wheeled vehicles.

It is also proposed to abandon motorcycles, scooters and three-wheeled vehicles (tuk-tuks) with internal combustion engines by 2035.

Abandoning gasoline and diesel fuel in India’s transportation sector will reduce global demand for crude oil, but the nation’s transition to electric vehicles lags behind other countries such as China.

According to the Indian government, diesel fuel and gasoline accounted for slightly more than half of the total oil consumption in India during the last year, which ended on March 31. According to the “Green Transition” report, starting in 2024, all new registration vehicles for city deliveries must be electric.

Other offers

The commission also put forward other proposals, including the achievement of 25% household use of electricity for cooking by 2030. This will help reduce dependence on imported liquefied gas and will promote the use of environmentally friendly aviation fuel.

Since the industrial and energy sectors are a key source of emissions in India, renewable generation, electrification of heating and energy efficiency are considered key pathways to the ecological transition.

However, according to the report, the country has an abundance of coal, and it may not be possible to completely stop its use within the next 15-20 years.
