According to the Ukrainian ambassador to Australia Vasyl Myroshnychenko, the father of Novak Djokovic should be banned from the Australian Open after he was photographed posing for a photo with supporters of Russian President Vladimir Putin at the championship, writes with reference to Express.co.uk.
Four men were detained and evicted for raising a Russian flag with Putin’s face after the Serbian tennis player’s quarter-final victory on Wednesday evening.
And a video posted later on YouTube shows Srdjan Djokovic with a fan who is holding a flag and wearing a T-shirt with a Z in support of the invasion of Ukraine. A YouTube channel called Aussie Cossack translates Djokovic Sr.’s words: “Da zdravstvuet rossiya.”
Ukraine’s ambassador to Australia, Vasyl Myroshnychenko, told the Herald Sun: “Tennis Australia must take action.”
“I think it would be a very good idea not to let the ego in.” I don’t know why he would say something like that, considering what the Russians are doing in Ukraine, how many people they killed, tortured, raped, and so on and all… the punishments that took place against civilians,” he pointed out.
Myroshnychenko added: “This whole Australian Open tournament was a controversy from the very beginning, first around the participation of Russian players, then the flags, now we are watching this provocation.”
“This was further aggravated by the comments of Djokovic’s father. Djokovic is a superstar and the number one celebrity in the tennis world, so it is very sad to see that his father supports Russia,” he said.
Unlike Wimbledon, players from Russia and Belarus can compete at the Australian Open under a neutral flag, but national symbols are prohibited after the invasion of Ukraine.
