Japan is negotiating the opening of a NATO office in Tokyo

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi announced plans to open a NATO representative office in Tokyo on Wednesday, CNN reports. This will be the first NATO office in Asia. According to the minister, negotiations are already underway. Hayasi emphasized that Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine affects stability in the entire world, and Japan must strengthen the security of its region.
NATO Director General Jens Stoltenberg confirmed the fact of the negotiations. He called Japan a close and important partner of the North Atlantic Alliance. He also mentioned that China’s policy can be a threatening factor for stability in the Pacific region. “What is happening in Europe is important for Asia, what is happening in Asia is important for Europe. Beijing is closely watching what is happening in Ukraine,” Stoltenberg said.

At the same time, NATO has several liaison offices in countries that are not part of the alliance, such as Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, and Ukraine.
